It’s almost time! On 29 June, 2019 you can experience the Ruhr region in an extra special way for one incredible night. ExtraSchicht, with its lineup of 500 fascinating experiences, is sure to put a smile on your face.
And many of the venues are just minutes away from Düsseldorf, because we’re on the doorstep to the Ruhr region – an area that’s brimming with unique attractions, impressive buildings and interesting historic sites.
Though the Ruhr region is always worth a visit, that’s especially true on this epic night when hundreds of thousands of people celebrate ExtraSchicht together.

Do you love theatre, fireworks & light shows? Then you’ll love ExtraSchicht.
This popular event, which features hundreds of exceptional experiences at 50 venues in 24 cities, kicks off at 6pm and lasts until 2am. Dance, theatre, light shows, music, comedy and awe inspiring fireworks displays are just a few of the experiences that await you.
In all, more than 2.000 performers will be celebrating history and the future as historic industrial buildings and cultural venues spring to life once again.
Even if you’ve attended ExtraSchicht in previous years, it always worthwhile to return because the program changes annually.
Want to take a look behind the scenes of a working brewery, listen to live music or enjoy a huge fireworks display? Interested in comedy, dance and street theatre? It’s your choice. Each location becomes a colorful, creative and cheerful experience.

If you’d like some inspiration, we’ve selected events taking place in cities near Düsseldorf. These impressive highlights await you, and they’re all just minutes away:
Duisburg
Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary, is also hosting the official opening of ExtraSchicht starting at 6pm. While you’re there take a tour of the blast furnaces, see the action theatre performance of PAN.OPTIKUM at 10:30pm, and don’t miss the musical fireworks at 11:15pm
Oberhausen
The Gasometer Oberhausen was commissioned in 1929 as a gas storage facility and has since become Europe’s tallest exhibition hall. Tours of the current exhibition “Der Berg Ruft” (The Mountain Calls) will be available every 60 minutes from 6:30pm to 12:30am.
Just a short walk away you’ll find the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen, current home to the “Hollywood Icons” exhibition featuring Hollywood makeup from 6-11pm. Prefer something different? Why not try your hand at bread baking in the courtyard, with its illuminated trees and romantic atmosphere?
Mühlheim an der Ruhr
Stadthalle Mühlheim an der Ruhr has been impressing visitors since 1926. During ExtraSchicht there will be several musical acts performing throughout the night, plus Venetian gondolas on the water and a large fireworks display at 11pm.
Dinslaken
The Kreativ.Quartier Lohberg offers wonderful worlds of experience, performance and international acts. The show “Phoenix”, directed by Raoul Schoregge, takes place at 6:45pm, 8:30pm and 10pm, and at 11pm don’t miss Sonderschicht – Die Party.
Moers
Tradition meets the future: from 6 pm to 10 pm enjoy a guided tour with a miner through the industrial monument Rheinpreußen Schacht IV, and be sure to watch the performance of the Schlosstheater ensemble singing in front of the hoisting machine at 8 pm and 10 pm. The night will conclude with musical fireworks & illuminations at 10:50pm.

Most of the venues are easily accessible from Düsseldorf and the rest of North-Rhine Westfalia. Your ExtraSchicht ticket not only includes access to the 50 venues, but also public transportation and shuttle busses to make travelling easy. So relax, leave your car at home, and enjoy the night without the stress of driving.
Prefer cycling? Many ExtraSchicht venues are conveniently located along the bike path network.
